meet the Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks. The Teacher for the Kindergarten classroom holds her Master's Degree in Education. She is certified by the Massachusetts Department of Education to teach Kindergarten through 3rd grade. This classroom has 12 children with one full time teacher. |
The goal of the Tiger class is to provide the children with as many hands on, concrete experiences as possible. The children are encouraged to work independently as well as with a partner in a group setting. Children learn best through teamwork with parents. Parents and children should feel comfortable with the teacher as well as being allowed to make the classroom their own. The GQCCC Tiger Room is a safe and secure learning environment for the Kindergarten children. |
The Kindergarten curriculum has been developed using the Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks. The Frameworks are standards which have been set by the State. These standards provide teachers with a guideline to what children should know by the end of the school year. The classroom is set up with seven different Learning Centers; Language, Math and Fine Motor, Science, Art, Library/Circle Time, Blocks, and Dramatic Play. These Centers provide the children with various hands on experiences that are geared to each of their developmental levels. There is a reading group just before lunch each day, during which time the children work on phonics and beginning reading skills. The children work on their writing skills during "Morning Message"and "End of the Day Journal" and in the Language Center. |
Attendance is extremely important during the school year. Several new topics are introduced each week and various activities are offered each day to support the new information. These topics often build upon one another and assist the children in mastering various skills. Frequent absences hinder a child's ability to master a skill. If your child is absent for any reason, please be sure to ask for any work that may have been missed. It is also extremely important that your child is in the classroom and ready to begin the day at 9:00AM each day. This is when Morning Circle will begin. During Morning Circle, new material is introduced and the related activities are explained. It is very distracting for the children when someone arrives late in the classroom. Life sometimes throws obstacles in our way and tardiness cannot always be avoided. If this should happen to you, please bring your child to the office and the Director or Assistant Director will be happy to assist your child in entering the classroom. If there is no one in the office, please ring the bell and a teacher will come to assist you. |
Parent involvement is very important in the Kindergarten Classroom. As with all classes at GQCCC, the Kindergarten has an open door policy. Please feel free to come and visit our classroom. You could come read a story to the children or have lunch with your child. If your schedule permits, you are welcome to come in and assist the children in one of the Learning Centers or to set up a bulletin board. There is a Parent Information Board that contains the curriculum for each week, the monthly newsletter, the Center newsletter, and other important information. You will also find the Morning Message and End of the Day Journal posted here. These journal entries provide you with daily information about the classroom. Home/School Connection activities are also posted on the Parent Information Board. For example, there may be a small take home book for you to do with your child. The books are meant to reinforce the skills your child is learning in the classroom and to help you to become an active participant in your child's progress. A portfolio of your child's work will be kept throughout the school year. Please feel free to look through the portfolio at any time. This will provide you with a good idea of how your child is doing with the curriculum. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to ask or set up a time to meet with your child's teacher. |
Each child has a cubby for his or her belongings. There is also a bucket above each cubby. This is where you will find important information from the Center, your child's art work, letters from the teacher, and other important information. Please be sure to empty this bucket every day and read the information provided to you. Your child's bedding will be kept in a separate bin located in the Rumpus Room next to our rest mats. This is to save room in your child's cubby for other belonging. It is important that you provide your child with a standard size pillow case to keep his or her bedding in. This provides more sanitary storage for the bedding and it also prevents the bedding from being misplaced. |
Each Friday, the Tiger Room has Show and Tell. Each month, in the Newsletter, you will receive a list that tells what the Show and Tell themes will be. The Show and Tell theme builds upon what the children are currently learning. This allows them to share similar experiences and relate to their peers on another level. Toys from home are not allowed at any other time. We have plenty of toys for your child to play with here. If your child has a special toy that he or she likes to sleep with, it may be brought in for rest time use. |
The Massachusetts Department of Early Education and Care regulations require the Kindergarten children to be provided with a period of rest time. Many children in Kindergarten have reached the age where they do not take a nap during the day. Because of this, children are allowed to bring in a quiet activity to keep them busy during rest time. The children are provided with puzzles, books or other small, quiet toys. If you child is interested in bringing in any other activities, please make sure the item is "quiet". This will allow the children who do want to sleep to take a nap. |
If your child is on medication, please be sure to inform the teachers. All medication given by teachers must be accompanied by a doctor's note and be in the prescribed container from the pharmacy. Over-the-counter medications will only be dispensed in accordance with the Center's Health Care Policy. It is very important that you inform your child's teacher of any Food Allergies you child may have. It is imperative for the safety of you child that all caregivers are aware of your child's allergies. |
